Atari 800XL
Discontinued Atari 800XL – Where To Find And Buy Online
The Atari 800XL is a home computer that was released by Atari Corporation in 1983 as an upgrade to the popular Atari 800 computer. It was part of the Atari 8-bit family of computers, which also included the Atari 400, Atari 800, Atari 600XL, and Atari 1200XL.
Some key features and specifications of the Atari 800XL:
The Atari 800XL was powered by an 8-bit MOS 6502C CPU running at 1.79 MHz.
It had 64 KB of RAM, which was an upgrade from the 48 KB of RAM in the previous Atari 800 model.
The 800XL featured the ANTIC (Alpha-Numeric Television Interface Controller) and GTIA (Graphics Television Interface Adapter) chips, providing graphics capabilities of up to 256 colors and various screen modes. It also had a POKEY (Pot Keyboard Integrated Circuit) chip that provided sound and I/O functions.
The computer had two joystick ports, one cartridge port, one expansion port for peripherals and memory upgrades, an SIO (Serial Input/Output) port for connecting disk drives and other peripherals, and an RF port for connecting to a television.
The Atari 800XL came with the built-in Atari Operating System (OS), which provided access to the BASIC programming language and allowed users to run software from cartridges or floppy disks.
The Atari 8-bit family had a wide range of software available, including games, productivity applications, educational software, and programming tools.
The Atari 800XL competed with other home computers of its time, such as the Commodore 64, Apple II series, and the Tandy/RadioShack TRS-80 models.
The Atari 800XL was popular among home computer enthusiasts in the 1980s and contributed to the growth of the gaming industry with a rich library of games. While it may be considered outdated by today’s standards, it holds a special place in the history of personal computing and gaming. Some retro computing enthusiasts and collectors still enjoy using and preserving these classic machines today.
